Northern Area Water Authority (NAWA)
The treatment process is broken into the following steps: Water is pumped from the wellfields into the plant where chlorine is added in order to oxidize the iron and manganese. The raw water is filtered through greensand pressure filters and cartridge filters for suspended solids removal. Then the raw water is sent to the membrane arrays for purification and softening of the water to drinking water standards. The use of membrane technology gives NAWA the adaptability to modify our treatment process should the drinking water standards be changed. The water is pumped into the degasifier system where the remaining carbon dioxide gases are removed. Finally chlorine & fluoride are added to the water prior to it being pumped to Tipp City and Vandalia for distribution systems. The water is softened to approximately 140 mg/l or 8.2 gpg and has a fluoride level of 1mg/l.
